Our Story
Bridging the past and present, one solidarity at a time.
Our duty is to fortify the chains that bind us.
As workers, our journey is a tapestry woven with the threads of knowledge, resilience, and unity. Without a grasp of our history, we find ourselves navigating in the dark, without the tools to safeguard our rights and aspirations. Understanding our position in society is the compass that guides us; it empowers us to defend what we have and strive for what we deserve. Progress hinges on knowing the forces that shaped our past and recognizing the allies who stood by our side.
Knowledge is the key, a powerful beacon illuminating the path forged by the battles and debates of yesteryears. The corporate interests recognize this, choosing to obscure the true history of workers. Yet, we stand as the living link between yesterday and tomorrow, entrusted with passing on the hard-fought gains and the invaluable lessons that shape our collective heritage.
This responsibility is uniquely ours to ensure that the next generation of workers inherits not only our successes but also the wisdom gained from our shared journey.
Weingarten Rights
In 1975, the US Supreme Court established in the case of J’. Weingarten Inc. that an employee has the right to have their Union Representative present if they believe that any questions they answer, during an investigatory interview, may lead to discipline or adverse actions against them.
“If this discussion could in any way lead to my being disciplined, terminated, or cause an effect on my personal working conditions, I respectfully request that my Union Representative be present at this time.”
Rule #1
The employee must make a clear request for Union representation before or during the interview. The employee can’t be punished for making this request.
Rule #2
After the employee makes the request, the supervisor has 3 options to either:
• Grant the request and delay the interview until the Union representative arrives and has a chance to consult privately with the employee: or
• Deny the request and end the interview immediately; or
• Give the employee a choice of: 1)having the interview without representation or 2)ending the interview
Rule #3
If the supervisor denies the request and continues to ask questions, this is an unfair labor practice and the employee has a right to refuse to answer. The employee cannot be disciplined for such refusal but is required to sit there until the supervisor terminates the interview. Leaving before this happens may constitute punishable insubordination.
Architects of Unity
A blueprint of success.
In the dynamic blueprint that is the IAM, each element seamlessly integrates, forming a structure much like a meticulously designed building. Think of the Local Lodges as the solid foundation, the bedrock upon which the IAM stands. Here, members gather to share, debate, and vote, crafting the essence of our collective strength.
Moving upward, the District Lodges serve as the inner structure, the framework that binds multiple Local Lodges across expansive territories. Like the intricate support system within a building, Districts amplify the collective voice, ensuring efficient services and representation for a larger membership base.
Widening your gaze to the vast regional territories – the land on which the edifice of this organization stands. It’s the canvas that paints the larger picture, comprising Local and District Lodges. Just as the land sustains the building, regional territories provide the broader context for the IAM’s existence.
Zoom in, and you’ll find the detailed Floor Plan – the Executive Council, guiding the course of the IAM mission with strategic precision. This is where decisions are made, policies shaped, and the collective vision takes form. Like a floor plan dictates the flow of a building, the Executive Council maps out the path forward for the IAM.
Now, behold the noble building – the Grand Lodge, the culmination of every Local, District, and Territorial effort. It’s the towering structure that represents our unity, strength, and shared purpose. Much like the overall building encapsulates every floor, room, and corridor, the Grand Lodge embodies the collective power of every member, forming an enduring symbol of our union’s resilience and solidarity.
Precision in Union Mastery
Leadership with the finesse of craftsmanship.
In the tapestry of the IAM, the Grand Lodge emerges as the guiding light, its leadership embodying the essence of dedication and wisdom. These leaders are the master craftsmen of our collective destiny, navigating the complexities of the labor landscape with a profound commitment to the well-being of every member. Their role extends beyond the strategic decisions – it’s a constant endeavor to foster unity, amplify voices, and uphold the values that define us. In every negotiation, policy formulation, and collective vision, Grand Lodge leaders infuse a human touch, ensuring that the heartbeat of the IAM resonates with the diverse needs and aspirations of its members. It’s not just leadership; it’s a narrative of shared purpose, a story written in the spirit of solidarity and woven into the fabric of our union family.
